On Saturday December 16th the Tyngsborough High School’s wrestling team finished first as a team at it’s annual Big Red wrestling tournament, becoming just the third team in Tyngsorough’s history to win the annual event.

There were a few wrestlers who finished first including Seniors Paul Donohoe (171 lbs) and John Coburn (152 lbs), Junior Shane Niven (145 lbs), who has won two years in a row, and Freshman Derek Golner (130 lbs).

Sophomore Taylor Gendron (125 lbs) finished second. Senior AJ LaBrecque (140 lbs), as well as Junior Dan Fox (heavyweight) and Freshmen Matt Donohoe (135 lbs) and Kurt Henderson (103 lbs) all earned third place finishes for their performances.

Donohoe’s final victory clinched the overall win for the Tigers, as he defeated a wrestler from Lawrence in the finals.

“I pulled the duck under [signature move] with ten seconds to go in overtime to get into the championship,” said Donohoe. “It was clutch.”

The Lawrence Kelleher Gymnasium held 13 different teams in it for an all day affair. Other schools that participated in the event included Acton-Boxboro, Billerica, Burlington, Whittier Tech, Fronier Regional, Hollis Brookline, and Pelham.

“It was a good day. Everyone did well,” coach James Tansey said of the team.

Lawrence placed second in the event.

The team as a whole looks a lot better than previous seasons with a win in the season opener at Whittier Tech. The Tigers steam rolled them, and after won a tough and competitive Big Red tournament. The last two seasons the Tigers haven’t been something to talk about, but this looks like a turn around year on all fronts on the individual and team scale.
