A recent poll of students indicates that Facebook
is without a doubt, the most prevalent and popular social networking
site to use.
Out of the 72 students surveyed, 81% (58 students)
had a Facebook, 49% (35 students) had a Youtube account, while only
26% (19 students) had a Myspace, and 6% (4 students) had a Twitter
profile.
"I like Facebook because I think it's so much
safer than Myspace and other sites," said sophomore Alverina
Berube, "And I don't really need all the fancy stuff that other
sites have. I just like to be able to comment on pictures and keep up
with my friends."
Not many students even knew what a Twitter was. But
for the few who did, they didn't seem to find it very useful.
"I had a Twitter,
but I got really bored with it, because you're so limited. All you
can do is update what you're doing for your friends. It doesn't
really interest me anymore," said sophomore Erika Lesofsky.
Out
of all the female students, only one, a freshman, claimed to have no
profile on any of these sites.
Out of the male students, eight
claimed to have no profile on any of these sites.
Out of the
students surveyed, 53% claim that their parents are "OK"
with them having a social networking profile.
"My mom knows
that I have one, but she does too, so she can check up on me!"
joked Mckayla Lopez.
Although Facebook is the most popular among
high school and college students- there are some people that prefer
Myspace.
"Facebook is way too invasive. You can include your
address AND phone number. No thanks," said sophomore Rachel
Field.
57 of the students (79%) surveyed claim to never use the
school computers to check or update their social networking
profile.
"I don't use the school computers because all the
websites are blocked," said junior Joe Maloney.
