Seniors Evan Mulawski, Mike O'Neill, and Josiah Swenson get to experience a college level computer science class everyday, here at Tyngsboro High School. All three students enjoy working with math and computers, and that's why they form the three-person AP computer science class taught by the Director of Technology, Mr. Rob Ford.

One may wonder why a three-person class is available at THS. According to Assistant Principal, Mr. Mike Mastrullo, AP classes "rarely get cut from the schedule". The teachers take extra courses to be certified to teach, and the students are willing to work hard. It's almost a guarantee that the students will benefit from the class.

"AP Computer Science was not going to run this year, but some seniors individually approached Mr. Ciampa about taking the class as an independent study," said Mr. Ford.

In a typical AP computer science class students "focu[s] on object oriented programming and primarily us[e] the Java programming language," explains Mr. Ford. Since this class is an independent study, the students complete the work on their own and review the material once or twice a week with Mr. Ford.

By taking this class, students can decide if they want to pursue a career in computer science. "AP Computer Science prepares students to study computer science in college, and is equivalent to an introductory course in college," said Mr. Ford. O'Neill plans on majoring in this subject, so he will already have an understanding of computer science before he steps foot in a college classroom.

So far, the seniors have been writing their own programs using the programming language, Java, and they look forward to working on future assignments.
