This year at Tyngsboro High School student schedules have had many problems due to a new way of doing things. Some of the classes have been "dried up," or cut because not enough students were enrolled in a class.

Students may not like their new class that they were put in but having a class with five or six students is not helping the situation with the budget. There are many factors that are used to decide if a class gets dried up or stays together. Vice Principal Mr. Mike Mastrullo said "We look at where the most need is."

For example, if an English class of six during third period is taking place then that class would most likely get dried up and moved to another English class a different period, but if there is an AP class with only three or four students in it that class would most likely stay together "because once a class is gone its hard to get back."

The scheduling for this year was very tricky. Only certain blocks were available for certain classes. This limited student choices. Most students were put in classes different from what they intended on taking. The classes and blocks all needed to be balanced out.

When a class gets dried up, the teacher receives a new class.

"Every teacher needs to have 5 classes a day," Mr. Mastrullo explains. The more important classes stay and the less important classes go, or move to another period in the day. The executive decision is made by Principal Don Ciampa. He is handed the proposition and gives the "yes" or "no".
