At-a-glance

In September of 1968, only five months before the historic Vietnam Tet Offensive, a new history teacher arrived at Tyngsborough High School. With a look of youthful enthusiasm on his face and countless historical facts on his brain, he commenced a career that was nothing short of inspiring. Arriving in the midst of a history-making era, Mr. Steven Nickerson impacted every fortunate student who was assigned to his class that year, and every year following. He imparted wisdom that not only reflected on classroom discussions but also on life lessons. His many students and countless alumni will remember long after the two o’clock bell the messages that he conveyed through his teachings and his own actions.

Nickerson’s homeroom is possibly the best example of his contagious spirit. Every student stands up straight as they recite the Pledge of Allegiance. During the moment of silence, all students remain standing respectfully until they are asked to sit down. Although this may sound like a small feat, this behavior is rare for high school students. In an age where most students barely pull themselves out of their seats during the pledge, Nickerson’s class is a revitalizing breath of fresh air.

This year will be the last year that Mr. Nickerson will be teaching at Tyngsborough High School. Although his retirement will be a loss for the students, it will provide him with the rest and relaxation that he deserves after his 36 year career. I’m sure that anyone who knows Nickerson or ever had the privilege of being one of his students will agree with the note posted on his door, “One More Year.”

Another highly influential teacher, Mr. David Senecal, will be retiring after a prominent career here at Tyngsborough High School. Mr. Senecal taught the Industrial Arts classes during his 35-year career. He also integrated Robotics, now known as the US First Program, into the extracurricular agenda. Mr. Senecal was also the first hockey coach in the district, and at one point, Mr. Ciampa, now principal, was his assistant coach. Mr Senecal is also credited with the introduction of video technology into the high school and the start of the first school paper. He will be greatly missed by students and faculty alike.
