At-a-glance

Out of the ten co-curricular clubs offered at Tyngsboro High School during the Fall, the Ping Pong Club, which meets Thursday afternoons in the gymnasium, seems to be experiencing what advisor Mr. James Robson calls “a year of growth.”

“The only problem [in creating the club] was getting enough students to show up. The past two years have started well, but after two months and with students involved in sports, the membership has dried up,” says Mr. Robson, “This year however, we have five or six members who have been there every time, so I think this is a year of growth for the Ping Pong Club!”

“[I joined] because I had a lot of fun playing it at my friend’s house,” says sophomore Amber Leavis. “It’s a tough game to play, but you don’t need to be smart or strong to join. Plus, everyone is so friendly and willing to help out if you’re stuck.”

But what can you expect at a typical club meeting?

“The first twenty minutes or so are warm-up games, and then we generally play a tournament,” Mr. Robson says. “I make a bracket depending on the amount of people there that day, organize the match-ups in a random way, and then we play to see who the champ of the day is.”

“My favorite part is that you can play epic ping pong, which is either when you hit the ball to the other side of the gym and your partner hits it back to you, or when you play without rules,” says Leavis.

“What I like about the club is the ping pong! While I'm no expert, I do enjoy playing the game, and it's great to see students enjoying it as well,” says Mr. Robson. “Perhaps the best quote of the year so far was from a student who was playing ping pong for the first time and said, ‘This is better than Xbox!’"

According to Mr. Robson, “Truer words have never been said.”
