This year's prom was "A moment in time" the junior class government hoped the students would never forget.
From eight p.m. to 12 a.m., students danced at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry on May 16 to beats the DJ blared from the speakers and were also allowed to explore some of the museum's exhibits.
The theme, "A moment in time", was created by the junior class government along with all the other planning.
"We originally chose ‘A night in Rome’ but it was too similar to the turnabout theme of this year. So we went with 'A moment in time', [referring to] the Roman era; that is why the food was Italian and the decorations consisted of grape vines, the color gold, etc," junior class president Monique Richards said.
Prom's preparations started two years ago when junior class government sponsor Kimberly Smith first chose the museum.
"The school wants prom to be downtown and with the size of our school, the museums are the best locations because we can easily fit over 1,000 people and still have room for dancing and tables," Smith said. "I also had students mention that they'd like to try a prom at the Museum of Science and Industry."
Smith assures the price was reasonable for a Saturday night downtown museum dinner and dance, despite possible price tag complaints and about 75 less students attending from last year’s prom.
"We are required to have prom on a Saturday night and the bottom line is that renting a museum out on a Saturday night and having a dinner/dance is expensive," Smith said. "[However] as far as I am aware, our prom is either the same cost or cheaper than comparable proms that are downtown at a museum."
Along with the large venue, students were treated with an ice cream and cheese cake station. The only complaint of the night was about some of the DJ's song selections, said Richards.
"I was disappointed myself because we put so much effort into finding songs that the students would enjoy, [but] the DJ comes with his own style and list of songs," Richards said.
Complaints aside, senior prom queen Jordan Wright believed prom was everything it should have been.
“Prom was such an amazing experience. I felt like a princess and was able to dance and see all my great friends and be with my boyfriend,” Wright said. “There is nothing I didn’t like about the dance and if I could, I would do that night over again and again.”
