Trees and presents and shopping, oh, my! You know what time of year I’m talking about: Christmas! We all love Christmas, right? Well, what if you don’t celebrate Christmas? There are other December holidays!
Kwanzaa originated here in the United States. In 1966, Ron Karenga made this celebration to be the first African-American holiday. His goal was to “…give [African-Americans] an alternative to the existing holiday.” The name of the holiday came from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which in Swahili means “first fruits”. It is celebrated right after Christmas from December 26 to January 1 every year.
There’s no specific way to celebrate Kwanzaa because every family celebrates in their own way. However, celebrations usually include African drums, songs and dances, poetry reading, storytelling, and a large meal. Much like Hanukkah, African-Americans celebrate this holiday for seven nights and have a type of candleholder called the Kinara.
Each night, one candle on the Kinara is lit after the family gathers, then they talk about one of the seven principles called Nguzo Saba. These principles are African culture values which help build and reinforce community among African-Americans. There are also seven basic symbols that represent concepts and values reflective of African culture. On December 31, a Karamu, or African feast, is held.
As you go about your business this holiday season, try to remember and respect those other people who do not celebrate the holiday season as you do. Enjoy whatever holiday(s) you celebrate!
