This year the school science fair held many great science projects, but only three were chosen to represent the school in the Dade County Science Fair.
The three chosen projects were “The Effect of an Herbal Supplement on Bacteria,” which was entered by Alejandra Dominguez and Marbely Cutino, both which are Ms. Icaza’s students. “This project deals with herbal medicine, and what they did was test this herbal medicine with bacteria, to check if the bacteria grew,” says Ms. Icaza. This project received an excellent mark and the students will be receiving medals and prizes on February 11, 2006 at Dr. Michael Krop Senior High school.
Another project which is going to participate in the Dade County Science Fair is “Staph Aureus in Wounds.” This project was done by Sergio Garrido, Leydi Caballo, Suyen Ramos and Maydenis Machado, which are also Ms. Icaza’s students. “Staph Aureus is a common pathogen in hospitals; they wanted to find if it was the most frequent isolated bacteria in wounds, so they visited local community hospitals, and they established that it was found almost in every test subject,” says Ms. Icaza. Ms. Icaza also said, “I am very proud, and this shows that we have great students. All in all, I am very happy.” This project also received an excellent mark and will also be receiving prizes on February 11, 2006 at Dr. Michael Krop Senior High school.
The last of the three projects that will be participating at the Dade County Science Fair is “Computer Applications in Science,” which was entered by Camilo Buccarn and Ariel Cambras. These students created a computer program that allows the teacher to do calculations in reference to force, mass, and acceleration. Ms. Alonso said, “The science fair is an enriching experience for the students because it expands their knowledge and creativity.” This project received an excellent mark as well, and a $50 check as part of their prize that they will be receiving at Dr. Michael Krop high school on February 11, 2006.
This year it was anticipated for the science fair to be very small, because of all the hurricanes. However, this year was a “banner year” according to Mr. Starkey, the science department head. Mr. Starkey added, “Instead of the regular 50 projects, we had 70. This surprised me because of all the hurricanes and bad weather but our students just kept on pushing and they made it a great year. I would also like to congratulate three teachers; Ms. Icaza, Ms. Alonso, and Dr. Rarrick who had more science projects than anybody else. If you would like to see any pictures, the display case right next to my class has the most recent pictures of students and their prizes. ”
