On February 18, 2006, the Miami Springs Senior High Mu Alpha Theta team attended an invitational at Middleton High School in Tampa, Florida. There they battled a myriad of schools in several areas that included Geometry, Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, and Interschool tests.
In preparation for the 2006-2007 competition year, no calculators could be used in any test, including statistics. “It was a little challenging,” said club member Macarena Arce. “I had gotten so used to using a calculator that it took me a little while to adjust.”
The entire team amassed their efforts to win 1st place in the Interschool test. In the Theta Open Test, Frank Rodriguez won 1st place and Juan Bustos won 8th in the Algebra II level. In the Alpha Open Test, a notable effort was recorded by Walter Cravero, who won 2nd place in the Pre-Calculus level. “The competition was really interesting this time around,” said Juan Bustos. “I’m really happy for Frank for what he got done.”
This was the fourth competition the math club had attended, performing extraordinary in their three previous engagements in Florida Atlantic University, Palm Harbor High School, and Felix Varela Senior High School. The State Competition is scheduled on April 20, and then to Ft. Collins, Colorado on July 16 for Nationals.
