In a student press conference held December 2, 2005, Superintendent Rudy Crew expressed new proposals for an innovative way of student learning. His suggestions include moving toward immediate action against F schools, internal changes like removal of soda from schools, and career-themed academics in the near future.

Dr. Crew discussed addressing students who are failing and their parents in a collective gathering sometime after winter vacation. “For me, [failing] is completely unforgivable,” says Dr. Crew.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools will now join the thousands of school districts around the country that have banned the sell of sweet drinks. Although this constitutes a loss of up to three million dollars for school teams and organizations, Dr. Crew has promised to compensate for the losses. The plan also calls for the removal of king size snacks and an option for a more expansive ban in the future.

Dr. Crew also plans to modify the curriculum to one that applies “real world” academic learning. He wants these new classes to connect study in the classroom to career practices. In this way, he believes Miami-Dade public school students will have a better opportunity in vocational studies and/or college.

Given that Dr. Crew has met most of the goals given to him last year, these new reforms will most likely be completed soon.
