Graduation is around the corner and seniors are ready and waiting. Many seniors wish to leave their marks on their high school by pulling a memorable senior prank. Most pranks may seem like harmless fun, but at what point does harmless fun get people into trouble?
When nothing is being damaged, people are not being hurt, or property is not being stolen… if the prank falls under any of these categories then it is most likely not a problem. What some students believe is fun may be harmful not only to others but to themselves; their futures could be put in jeopardy. Even though most students that pull pranks think they will never get caught, the likelihood is actually very high. Depending on the seriousness of the prank, students could end up losing much of what they worked hard for throughout their high school career. If someone is caught pulling a prank, punishments can vary from the possibility of not graduating, loss of any scholarships that may have been earned, and jail time.
Is a short laugh by the prankster and his friends really worth the possibility of losing out on many of life’s opportunities? Most seniors would think not, but there are always the ones that do.
It is undoubtedly believed that schools now are stricter than they used to be. Today’s technology makes it extremely difficult to get away with anything.
Seniors Jason Lester, Marcus St. Julien, and Kristopher Betts have similar opinions that schools have gotten ridiculously strict. They believe school has changed since their parents were in their shoes, but not necessarily for the better.
“Kids are the same, but the rules and laws have changed making it more serious and consequential,” said Betts.
These senior students have heard stories about the old days where pranks would have less severe consequences.
“It’s almost a guarantee that you will be at least suspended if you pull a prank,” said St. Julien.
Some students have their own ideas of what would be a good prank. Though some would never put their plan into play, it is just fun to think about. Lester thinks it would be funny to glue all the chairs down; Betts likes the idea of staging a mass walkout, as difficult as it may be; and St. Julien had the creative idea of dropping hundreds of balls from the second floor down the main stairs.
Nothing is ever done without consequences, though. How would these students punish pranksters? Betts focuses on old fashion methods; when someone makes a mess they clean it up, through hard work or payment. St. Julien believes in a form of public humiliation. Lester has a unique method of punishment.
“They have to free style rap battle between them and me,” said Lester.
They all agree on one thing: if there is any question that what is being planned may break the law, or have serious consequences, then it is better left undone.
