Potomac Mills has raised the bar, changing the overall shopping experience. This year, shoppers can expect to see many changes as they stroll from shop to shop.

The mall is known for its wide array of outlets. From JC Penney to Sears, shoppers have access to all their favorite stores. While the mall is a major tourist attraction, locals find that it doesn’t measure up against nearby malls. Many students and faculty prefer Tyson’s Corner or Springfield Mall because of their larger flagship stores and their cleaner appearance.

“I do not like shopping at Potomac Mills because it’s too long, there are no department stores, and the stores are not neat,” said social studies teacher Mary Ann Page.

Recently, Potomac Mills has added newer, larger stores. A former outlet, Forever21, now has its own massive full-sized store. Other new stores have large windows full of vibrant displays, similar to those in pricier malls. Some stores offer more expensive items, while others just have more floor space with the same reasonable prices. So far, most students are happy with the changes.

“I love all the changes,” said senior Clayton Halliburton, “I also love the new Coach store. It’s not as big as other stores, but it still has the latest gear.”

Some students have mixed emotions about the modifications. They are happy to have the new choices, but they feel a bit overwhelmed.

“I appreciate the changes, but I also think it is bad because now I will spend my whole paycheck at the mall,” said senior Ashley Cypress.

Students feel like the mall is trying to attract more teens that are willing to spend more money. Some feel that the new stores are targeting fashion-conscious shoppers. Others think the mall wants to attract local patrons.

“They are trying to attract the kids that are into fashion, and really take time to get ready in the morning,” said Halliburton.

Many students agree with Halliburton. Some believe that the mall is doing an adequate job at trying to look more like its upscale counterparts. However, some still find it hard to see the mall differently.

“I think that the new stores make the mall seem a little more upscale because they look very nice, but I don’t think the mall really is,” said junior Jessica Peterson.

So far, the changes have received nothing but praise from students. However, it is hard to keep customers satisfied for long. Potomac Mills has garnered respect, but only time can tell if the additions will have the desired effect.
