Which sports push you to the edge of your seat? Have no limits, a ball that never stops moving? It’s our own Northwest Boy’s soccer and Girl’s field hockey teams. And, this year promises to be their best ever.
The boy’s soccer team lost several senior players from last season, but has filled those spots with experienced players. The team, overall, looks very promising. Julio Castillo and Zach Brennen have moved up from JV as goalkeepers. Defenders include Senan Zarei, Sam Joe, Myles Jackson, Omar Said, and Curtis Wayne. The new midfielders, who will make plays and drive the team, are Jorge Acuna, and Miguel Angel Grande. And, forwards Eric Madrid and Marc-Andre will be there to hit the upper 90. Captains Hernan Angulo, Kyle Dippepe, and Patrick Emmet will be the leaders for the team. “We have the ability and the potential to be division champions and go far in playoffs” commented senior captain Hernan Angulo. Their season has started with Blair High School as their first victim in a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Kevin Andino and Mario Angulo. “We are a dynamic team with a lot of talent” said senior midfielder James Galo. Their second game against BCC ended with a 3-2 win thanks to Kevin Andino who scored the game winner. “I’m very happy about it, Joe filtered me a great ball and I just finished it,” said Andino. Northwest Boys had another win against Magruder High school in a 1-0 win. Days later Angulo, and Andino won the game against powerhouse Churchill 2-1. The players believe they can continue this winning streak all the way to the playoffs.
The Varsity Girls Field Hockey Team will be going all out to be the best in the county and they came out strong in their opener against Rockville in a 3-0 win. Captains Kier Borg and Vicki Graham lead the team to victory with the strategic plays called by Coach Randy Hostetter. “We have a lot of very skilled players who are learning to work together quite nicely” said Coach Hostetter. Although the girls lost the next two games against Walter Johnson, and Whitman, the games have been very close. “We did not beat Whitman, but we were able to come from behind and take the game into overtime,” said Coach Hostetter after the Whitman game, which ended 3-2 in overtime. In their following game against Clarksburg the girls won 1-0 a fantastic game that went all the way through double over time. Then, days later, the girls trashed and scored three against Watkins Mill. The field hockey team is looking to carry this momentum all the way through playoffs.
These Northwest “futbolistas” and Field Hockey girls are off to a great start. Northwest high School Fans can look forward to a very competitive playoff season for our two teams.
