CUSD is denying students the privilege of attending summer school due to budget cuts.  This summer, CUSD will limit health and computer applications to incoming seniors and students who need to complete the competencies to fulfill their graduation requirements.

Students are not able to take summer school courses to get ahead for the fall semester.

“I’m failing [online] health and I’m glad I have the option to retake it this summer but I don’t think it’s fair to only allow it for students who are failing health,” said freshman Shaelyn Howard.

Lack of funding is the main cause of cutting summer school.

“The state is in a financial crisis and districts are not getting the funding they were promised,” said counselor Jessica Isern.

The district currently recovers from the loss of aide from the state by cutting back on certain programs students want to take over the summer.

Many students will take courses at Butte Community College to earn credits in mathematics and fine arts.

Likewise, Butte College also suffers from the state’s sudden loss of revenue.

“Because of the budget crunch, Butte College classes are harder to access for high school students,” said head counselor Karen Olberg.

Many students will need to find alternatives to complete their competencies and requirements to receive their graduation diploma.
