Students attend tutorial when a homework assignment goes forgotten, a detention is given due to a tardy, or simply for needing help on a concept. But for other students it becomes a weekly occurrence. Although this tutorial in the “Learning Center” offers a solution for students who need a little more help than most. Christine Callas and Deanna Holen lead the program which ran for the past year helping freshman in English and math classes.

“We target struggling freshman as a targeted intervention to help transition into high school,” said Holen. Math takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays and English takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Students referred by teachers take part in the tutorial if consent is given by their parents.

“The Learning Center has definitely grown, we started out with about five students per day and now we have almost 25 each period,” said Callas.

Both teachers also want to get older students involved as well. Having a staggered lunch for freshmen will allow juniors and seniors to tutor freshmen in the Learning Center during their fourth period class.
“The students will be responsible for getting lesson plans from teachers and sitting and working with students, especially in math,” said Holen.

Both teachers hope that the program can continue to help freshmen and PV become a stronger, more effective academic environment.
