Around the nation Google has been purchasing dark fiber, or unused optical fiber, in order to build a fiber-optic network. Google has officially declared themselves to be internet service providers. Google’s fiber optic network will go a hundred times faster than current internet providers. "Google’s internet speed will be unparalleled to past internet," said Bob Linscheid, co-creator of the Google Fiber Optics for Chico Facebook page and of Chico Economic Planning Corp.

Google plans to run a test trial with select cities with populations ranging 50,000 to 500,000 before going public.

"Chico would be a very good location; it has numerous university students and its population is very well educated; filled with people who use the internet regularly," said Kyle Goodman, co-creator of Google Fiber Optics for Chico Facebook page.

Cities can register for this opportunity by filling out an application. So far, 42 states contain cities who applied to date. Google will determine its winner by the end of this year.

"I am excited abut the 3D imaging, fast downloads and internet that is supplied by Google! I assume the quality will be similar to Google’s other products," said freshman Anna Lee.
