For
any NFL hopeful, getting drafted to play is the greatest feeling in the
world, especially getting drafted in the first round. The players that
were selected on Thursday, April 26, were filled with emotion. These
emotions ranged from happy to excited to overwhelmed, but there was one
player that was heart-broken. Rutgers University wide receiver Mohamed
Sanu was projected to go in the mid to late 2nd round, but got an
unexpected phone call during the 27th pick of the 1st round. The person
on the phone told Sanu that he had been selected by the Cincinnati
Bengals, at first Sanu and his family celebrated like there was no
tomorrow. But, when Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner went to the
podium to announce the pick, Sanu’s name wasn’t called. This brought
confusion to Sanu, his family and his agent who tweeted saying that he
was going to become a Cincinnati Bengal. Sanu later found out that the
phone call he had received was a prank phone call. His heart sank, and
so did his families. I think that this could’ve been the cruelest thing a
person could do to an NFL hopeful. This is their career, they have
trained to become an NFL player, and somebody messed with it. According
to Sanu’s agent, he is doing fine and says nobody should worry about
him. Sanu tweeted the morning after the draft,”Thank God for giving me
another day and another opportunity to chase my dream …
#thankfulandblessed.” Hopefully Sanu will be drafted in the second round
and make a huge impact in his rookie season.
