To say that Keane’s debut album “Hopes and Fears” was eagerly anticipated is almost comparable to calling the ocean a puddle. With the release of their smash hit Somewhere Only We Know, which climbed to number three on the billboard top one-hundred, the British trio gained a reputation for producing great tracks similar to those you might expect from the American band Coldplay. The bands follow-up single, Everybody’s Changing, proved that the English boys weren’t just some one-hit-wonder band, and were in the American scene to stay.
“Hopes and Fears,” released in 2004, is a musical masterpiece that soothes listeners with its melancholy lyrics and rhythms. Fans can expect to feel calm and comfortable when listening to ballads such as the title track, Somewhere Only We Know, and Everybody’s Changing. Other tunes like the uplifting and inspiring This is the Last Time, and Can’t Stop Now, keep with the soothing theme of the album and will make listeners want to dance and sing along. Other tracks, such as the heartrending song, She Has No Time, leave listeners feeling sorrowful, yet encouraged at the same time. This is the gift that the British band possesses, and what makes them stand out from the crowd; an ability to make listeners realize that there is hope in time of fear.
With its family friendly lyrics and modern melodies, “Hopes and Fears” is truly enjoyable for people of all ages and walks of life. Keane painted a true work of art and listeners will eagerly wait in anticipation for their second installment.
