Many students have recently argued against several school rules, and they complained about how we are treated differently than students in other private schools. A common complaint made by students is, “This is ridiculous. We are still being treated like middle-schoolers.” I agree. We should be treated differently as high school students. What we have is no freedom, same classes every day, no off-campus except for seniors, strict dress code, and no water bottles. These are a few of many problems kids are complaining about around campus.
“No Freedom?!” That’s right! At the June Shelton School, high school students are saying they feel like middle school children. For example, now on Mondays we can't leave advisory--not even to get help on homework or to borrow a book from a teacher.
Shelton also has several other rather new rules. One states the students cannot use water bottles in class or in the hallways on campus. That’s absolutely absurd. Often times, students at Shelton take medication that makes their mouths dry. That alone should be a good reason to allow water bottles in the classroom and the hallways.
Many students want to know why juniors can’t leave campus for lunch. Why is this? The administration has never given us a straight answer. Many believe that juniors should be allowed off campus privileges, but only if they maintain good grades and have the approval of their teachers. Some sort of compromise should be addressed to allow the juniors off-campus privileges, such as limiting their time, or only allowing them to leave certain days of the week.
These rules should be changed or at least reconsidered in order to maintain a pleasant and comfortable learning environment for everyone.
