Stu-Co members John, Brielle, Simone, and Macy join Karla Brainard (center) of the FBI
It’s October 21, and an FBI agent has paid a visit to Shelton. No, the administration has not gotten involved with the mafia, rather she was here to caution us about an important issue in today’s modern world, cyber predators. Agent Karla Brainard has had much experience with sex offenders online as an employee of the FBI Cyber Squad Dallas division, and came to Shelton to share her experiences and knowledge with those who need it most, teenagers.

While she does not claim to know much about computers, she surrounds herself with people who do. What she does know about is the inner workings of the predator mind. She knows what makes them tic, and how they go about doing what they do. Some of the stories she told us were downright scary, including one about a girl who was kept in a basement for three days, and another who killed herself after her “love” dumped her.

During the assembly, which was held in the morning in the Dining Hall, a video was shown explaining some of this to us, and helped show what to do and what not to do while online. In essence, the message was not to put anything out online that could give away your location or personal life, such as the school you go to, your birth date, or where you live.
