Charging Mountaineers— With a charge, the football team runs in with a yell to kick off at the first home game against Cassville.

The football season is looking promising, despite the rocky start. At this point in the season, the Mountaineers are running a record of 3-4 with successes over Lamar, East Newton and McDonald County, and losses to Cassville, Carl Junction, Monett and now Seneca.

Mt'Neers hosted the Seneca Indians here Friday, a gloomy cold, wet evening that probably caused the crowd to be light. The game was a heartbreaker with a loss to Seneca and a score of 34-7.
The week before though the Mt’Neers whipped Lamar with a score of 42-33. The five touchdowns were passes from quarterback Corey Phillips, setting a school record, to Caleb Myers who caught two, and Jackson Tettenhorst, Kaden Jones, and Blake Grooms with one each. We had 3 fumbles but Lamar had eight. Hunter Brown led in rushing. Corey Phillips had his first truck of the year when he ran over a Lamar Tiger. “We played really well Friday and took the win.” Said Maberry.

The Mountaineers took a victory over the MacDonald County Mustangs Fri. Sep. 25th with a score of 28 to 12 after consistent domination.

Playing the Cassville Wildcats, the defending state champs, the Mountaineers showed full potential, but it wasn’t enough to prove victorious. We received some fire from Carl Junction which led to a loss in overtime, attributed to a false whistle blown by a referee at the game. Number 1 ranked Monett took a victory over the Mountaineers, who fought hard but ended up losing.

The Mountaineers kicked off the season with a victory over East Newton.

“We’re playing well,” Said Head Football Coach Maberry, “We’ve missed some opportunities to have a better record, but we’re looking forward, not backward.”

And as the Mountaineers gear up to play Springfield Catholic, and the age-old rival Aurora for the continuation of the season, playing well and limiting mistakes is going to prove which team is more successful in the district.
