At-a-glance

Brittinni Humphries is in this month’s artist spotlight. Every month a different artist with exceptional skills is chosen to be applauded in the Art section. Brittinni definitely is worthy to be the spotlight this month. She is a student who knows what she wants to do. This photo shows a content face with a sure idea that she is an artist who can put her emotion into art work that should be proclaimed, not hidden. LLHS go-getter Brittinni struttin’ her stuff in the form of art. -

Brittinni Humphries is different. She is one of those rare breeds of people that you only meet once in your lifetime. She doesn’t judge people, and she is a writer. You might have seen some blogs on the internet or maybe her articles in different sections of the newspaper. Or perhaps you’ve read one of her essays for school.

It’s not that type of writing that I’m talking about, though. It’s the stories and poems that drew me to Brittinni as an artist. She writes of her life and everything that revolves around it.

“Experiences, just things I’ve been through. People that have come and gone in my life.”

Brittinni has been writing ever since she gained the ability. Her first story was about four sisters who each had a different power from being experimented on. It’s the typical super hero story we all write as a kid right?

Well, Brittinni is from Florida, so it gives her a unique perspective that us New Mexicans might not be familiar with. This also means that readers might not be able to relate to the first poem she ever wrote, but if you’ve ever been depressed it should spark your interest.

“The first one I remember was, well… I wrote it because I was depressed and I was in the middle of a hurricane and it made for the perfect metaphor.”

Brittinni doesn’t write just as a hobby. She writes to show feeling and emotion.

“It’s my way of telling the world how I feel and what’s going on in my life without being too brutally honest. It’s just how I explain things without pointing fingers.”

Brittinni is not famous for her writing yet, but she is on her way. One of her poems that she placed on Poetry.com was recently selected out of the millions submitted to be published. I, as a reporter wondered how she got so good at writing. That’s how I figured out that she does everything freehand. She just lets it come out and flow freely.

Brittinni is not only a soon to be published poet but she also likes other things like reading, volleyball, going to church, and play the drums.

So, what’s next for Brittinni? After graduation she plans to pursue a medical field, but she assured me that it would not stop her from writing. Her next goal is to finish one of her much anticipated novels.
