With the freedom of summer, comes the need for cash be it for college or just for hanging out with friends. Not all of us get allowances from our parents and we have to find other means of achieving cash. So here are a few tips to earn money during summer break.
When looking for a job the idea is to sell yourself like a product. What makes you better from any other person applying for a job? A good handshake is a must, as well as being polite, yet energized (no one wants a lazy jerk on the job). Also looking clean and not drowning yourself in makeup helps. Believe it or not makeup can flake off and get in food or on clothes. Remove that nail polish if you are applying for a job at a restaurant or any place that deals with food. Employers do not want any specks of nail polish falling into food. Proving that you know this will impress them, actually doing any kind of research into a business will impress them. It shows that you really want the job. That little bit of effort goes a long way.
Getting a job can take a lot of time. Employers get flooded with applications from teenagers, so they have a lot to choose from. Sophomore Kameryn Casey admits, “I harassed and harassed them until I got the job.” Some people get lucky and impress employers right away, just by handing in the application. Directly giving an application to a manager or employer is a good way to make an impression right away. Do not be afraid to ask if you can see a manager when you turn in your application. And like Casey, do not be afraid to bother them about the job, it shows that you really want it.
When impressing an employer you have to make sure that you are the best person they could hire. There are important questions you should have in mind before filling out an application: What makes you better than the person sitting next to you? How often could you be there a week? Would you be able to run in and save the day if someone could not work? Why should you get hired?
There are a few things to consider when you fill out an application. The more you are available the better, for it shows that you are flexible. Being honest about after school activities is important as well. Employers do not like suddenly finding out that you are not available for most of the week because of basketball or something else. References can be important as well, for some places do contact them. If you know someone that works at the place you are applying try using them as a reference, but coaches, the people you babysit for, and teachers are options too. Think about the people who would say something great about you without hesitation.
If getting a job is not your cup of tea, or if you are a lowly 13 year old that is “too young” in the eyes of employers there are other ways of earning money. We all know there is babysitting, but lawn mowing is another option. Getting a few flyers and placing them in places like your church is a good way to advertising lawn mowing or babysitting.
