Mountain View graduate, Derek Raivio, was known around school as “the star basketball player.” Now, two years later, nothing has changed except for the stage in which he plays. Derek has proven himself at the next level of basketball, starting as a sophomore for NCAA powerhouse, Gonzaga University and now nearly every college basketball fan in the nation knows about the skinny kid from Vancouver, Washington. Derek is among the nation leaders in assists and in early January he scored a career high 32 points.
Gonzaga has a great basketball program and is known for producing exceptional point guards that go to the NBA. Derek follows in the footsteps of NBA Hall of Famer, John Stockton and Blake Stepp, as well as Dan Dikau and Richie Frahm, both of whom are from the “Couve.”
Playing alongside sophomore phenom Adam Morrison and future NBA star Ronny Turioff, Derek hopes to help take the Bulldogs deep into the NCAA tournament in March.
From shattering school records in the Thunder Dome to playing on ESPN, “D-Rav” has used his borderline obsessive work ethic to get where he is and he shows no sign of slowing. He has a bright future at Gonzaga and although it’s still much too early to speculate, some dare to predict that in another two years we will be watching our own Derek Raivio work his game in the Association.
