Bess Wilhelms WC: 216 Dropping Classes Brief
For Andrew McHugh, senior, it wasn't second quarter that came too soon, but six days after, at the point where he was no longer allowed to drop his eighth class, Spanish.
"I was trying to drop Spanish and I was a couple of days behind," McHugh said, "I talked to Mrs. Cosic, my counselor, and Mr. Townsend and Dr. Holley."
This information has been in the handbook for more than the nine years, according to Christine Lindquist, sophomore class principal. For many students this is now coming to light, along with that the only way to be able to drop the class is to get the permission of the assistant principal and principal according to Rachel Cosic, senior class counselor.
"I understand part of the reasoning is they need to have a certain number of people in each class," said McHugh.
The system was started to stop students from dropping a class near the end of the semester in order to avoid a failing grade, although dropping the class does not affect the GPA of a student Lindquist said.
"We want kids to continue to try," said Lindquist.
McHugh is planning on double majoring and going into a graduate program and wants to concentrate on his five AP classes.
"It's not a good policy. I need to know AP stuff,” McHugh said. “Spanish is at the bottom of the list."
