The game started off a little slow, but soon the action picked up and the Warriors scored the first touchdown against the Encina Bulldogs. Normally a team winning by quite a few points is not that unusual, but as you may know, the high school football community does not consider West Campus to be a challenging team. As the Sacramento Bee stated earlier this year about the team, “Winning one game would be an accomplishment.” But this year is different.
In the first quarter, the Warriors were up by 26 points. At the end of the game, after exceptional performances by Carnell Davis, Andrew Steele, Manuia Fruean, and Tristan Howard, the Warriors won 54 to 12!! “What is success? When preparation meets opportunity,” Coach Pac commented.
Before every game, the players listen to music and pray in order to be mentally prepared. According to the players, the main strength of the team is their defense. “You practice hard so it’s easier in the game,” Tristan Howard remarked. It must be the long hours after school that make the team better on the field. The team begins conditioning in the spring, and by the time the season starts they are practicing everyday for two and a half hours. Head coach Nathan Preston has been working hard with his athletes and is thrilled with their accomplishments.
“The team worked hard, the alignment was good, and we are now an undefeated team!” exclaimed Carnell Davis. With the long practice hours, the team is able to pull off the plays with practically no flaws. “We dominated the whole game,” said Andrew Steele. With the Warriors so far ahead in points it was no wonder they did.
The Warriors are now 5-0, which puts them in first place in our league. Manuia Fruean summed it up by saying “I believe the team this year is the best we’ve ever had. Finally knowing that we could win and do little things better than anyone else.”
