The school year has begun, and once again several new teachers must adapt to Astoria High. Mr. Filec, the freshman, sophomore, and junior English teacher, seems to be getting along fine.
Mr. Filec’s previous job was at Herscher, Illinois. He was the English teacher there and coached wrestling. He liked teaching at a school like Herscher, but the district was making changes to the system, and he didn’t quite agree with them. He left his job there and was actually on his way back home to Florida when he received an email. Mr. Abernathy had found him on a website for teachers who are seeking employment.
Mr. Filec sent in his resume as requested and had an interview with Mr. Abernathy. He still had thoughts of going home, but when he met the faculty and staff, he felt really welcomed and decided to stay. Mr. Abernathy even helped him find a home.
Just a few weeks into the school year, Mr. Filec is impressed with the students and faculty. As the school year progresses, he hopes to get even more involved. Mr. Abernathy had talked to him about starting up new activities such as a newspaper, a fall drama, or wrestling. Mr. Filec believes it’s important for teachers to get involved and has always been a part of extra curricular activities.
Mr. Filec studied at Elmers College. While there, he applied for a scholarship that required him to write an essay. He was one of four chosen. His reward was studying at Keble College at Oxford, England. He studied drama and British literature. .
Some of Mr. Filec’s hobbies include fishing, golfing, paint balling, rock climbing, and bowling. He goes skiing at least three times a year. This will also be his first year bow hunting.
