The Astoria Operation Teen Safe Driving group recently rewarded high school faculty, staff, and students for proper seatbelt usage. The group conducted a surprise survey on Thursday March 8, 2012, as students left the school parking lot. The survey showed 83% of drivers properly wore a seatbelt. The results of this survey was an improvement from a survey done on December 8, 2011, that showed only 62% of drivers leaving the school wore a seatbelt. OTSD chose not to reveal the date of either of these surveys in order to catch drivers in their usual routine. The prize also remained a surprise until the day the prizes were distributed. Cold beverage traveling cups with a lid and straw were handed out to the high school. The cups had “Astoria Operation Teen Safe Driving 2012” written across them. Mr. Elmore, OTSD sponsor, said the cups were “something everyone would want and these seem to be popular.” Mr. Elmore also wanted to remind everyone, “AHS students need to keep up with seatbelt usage since there will be another prize giveaway coming up soon.”
