With the boys basketball team in the playoffs, it
is time for the Wilmington Greyhounds to say goodbye to the regular
season. The Hounds finished with an
overall record of 14 wins and 8 losses.
It is the first time since 1992 that they have had a winning season.
With seniors Shane Wagner, Carson Sharbaugh, Ian
Kelly and Dallas Hartman and junior Jake DeMedal in the starting lineup, the
Hounds combined height and talent on the hardwood.
According to DeMedal, the highlight of the season
“was definitely when Shane hit the game-winning shot against Shenango.” The home win, although not part of league
play, was exciting as the Hounds had previously been defeated by the Wildcats
at the Union Christmas Tournament.
The team had a record of 1-1 in the beginning of
the season, beating Villa Maria Academy in the first game of the Jamestown
Tip-Off Tournament and losing in the championship game to the Jamestown
Muskies. However, the Hounds were
without four starters due to the extended football season.
Head Coach Will Harris said, “The hardest thing
about the other guys missing in the beginning of the season was trying to get
them back into basketball shape. Football
shape is a lot different than basketball shape.”
The greatest challenge of this year’s season according
to Coach Harris “was just waiting for everyone to be in the gym at the same
time and to start playing.”
With the strengths of this year’s team being
their height and their desire to win, the Hounds gave opponents problems when
they stepped on the floor.
Currently the team is in the playoffs and already
have played two games, winning the first against Titusville and losing the
second to Mercyhurst Prep. They will face the Raiders from Reynolds High School
on Saturday, February 28, at 1 o’clock at Farrell High School.
