The last few weeks for the Seaman Viking volleyball team were supposed to be a showing of whether they are state contenders or pretenders. So far in the season Seaman has shown that they can get to the top of the hill, but whether they can get over is still up for debate.

Tomorrow the Lady Vikes travel down to El Dorado for the El Dorado invitational.

Number one in 5A Bishop Miege traveled to North Topeka along with Junction City. This was the biggest test for how Seaman would fare against top teams in 5A. After easily sweeping Junction City the Vikings now matched up with the Stags.

The first two games were a split, 16-25 and 25-23. The third game went much as the first with the Stags taking the match with a 17-25 game.

The greatest showing from the Vikings came during their triangular with Washburn Rural and Highland Park. The Scots were no match for the Vikings, getting blitzed from the beginning and losing, 25-7 and 25-8. Next up was Centennial League powerhouse Washburn Rural.

“They are what most programs in the state are aiming for,” said Senior Beca Boyd. Rural ruled the first game as they ravaged through the Vikings for an easy 25-10 victory.

After the blowout the Vikings got back to what they have done most of the season, winning. Although the next two games were much closer, the Vikings prevailed with wins of 25-21 and 25-23.

Next up was the Seaman Invitational. The Vikings roared through pool play, not even playing a match with three games. Victims of this rampage included Colby, St. Mary’s, Leavenworth, and Junction City.

Tournament play got a little more difficult as the Vikings matched up with Lawrence Free State.

After letting the first game slip the cardiac Vikes stormed back to win the next two and the match. The day ended on a bad note as Hayden swept the Vikings to take the championship. “We were disappointed,” said Senior Lindsey Chandler. “We really wanted to win it all.”

The disappointment lingered all the way to Washburn Rural with Seaman and Hayden visiting.

The Vikings played five games and only won one of them, getting swept by Rural and losing to Hayden in three. “That was a tough four days,” said Boyd. “We just need to get back on track.”
