The United States Department of Energy has several helpful tips for saving energy.

Now consumers need to work to improve conservation measures in order to keep the community healthier, by saving money on heating, cooling, and electricity on their website www.energysavers.gov/tips.

One of the tips found on this website is quite simple by just checking insulations in and around attics, basement walls, ceilings, floors, and crawl spaces insulation to lessen heat or air conditioning bills.

Since heating takes up 45 percent of energy uses in a household, look for air leaks near windows, switches, and electrical outlets.

Another major tip that reduces the cost of energy bills is choosing alternative lighting and having lights on timers.

When determining what energy saving light bulb to use, the cost may be surprising. Even though energy saving light bulbs may cost more, they also save money because they last longer than a normal light bulb.

Halogen incandescents compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light emitting diodes (LEDs) are energy efficient and very popular among buyers.

Another way to save energy comes from water heating because it comes right after space heating with burning up 18 percent of utility bills.

To save on water heating, make sure to repair any leaky faucets, check to see if the hot and cold pipes in households have heat traps, and every three months remove a quart of water from the water tank to help eliminate sediment.

Many of these tips from the United States Department of Energy are non-time consuming and only cost a couple extra dollars to help save more money when the utility bill comes.
