“Our most successful year ever” says Terri Causey, DECA Advisor. Thirteen proud students returned from the DECA State Career Development Conference with a new kind of confidence. A competitive team from the Marketing Communications major at the Academy for Technology and Academics traveled to the Embassy Suites and Convention Center in North Charleston, SC, February 20-22. Students’ participated in Individual Series Events, Management Team Decision Making Events, Marketing Research Events, Chapter Team Events, and Business Management and Entrepreneurship Events. The two day event held anticipation and anxiety for every student, as they awaited their testing, role plays, presentations, with a formal awards banquet concluding the event!
Six students will move on to compete at the national level in Anaheim, California, April 30-May 3, 2009. Receiving 1st place in the Learn and Earn Project is Quinten Dottin, Kenisha Frinks, and Seth Gainforth and 1st place in Hotel and Lodging Management is Caitlyn Subbert. Third place winners eligible to compete at nationals is Lindsy Dodson for the Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan and Khalif Clayton for Entrepreneurship Written Participating.
Additional winners include five receiving honorable mention: Oba Mubarak and Michael Rovetto for the Entrepreneurship Written Event, Kolby Floyd and Alley Quiroga for the Internet Marketing Team Decision Making Event, and Bryana Evans for the Marketing Management Series. Cody Stacy received recognition as a top 10 finalist in the Technical Sales Event and Ashley Kronenwetter accepted the award as chapter representative for the Chapter Awards Project.
DECA is the co-curricular student organization for the Marketing Communications major at The Academy for Technology and Academics. Applications for registration is currently being accepted for the 2009-2010 school year. Through participation in DECA, students have the opportunity to participate in competitive events, to build leadership skills, to network with other students and professionals in the field of marketing, and to attain scholarships.
