Self defense is something that Roseville High School senior, Jenna Habeil, takes very seriously.  Habeil has been involved in self defense for about a year and a half and was first introduced to it by her family.

“My family has been involved in self defense for many years and they encouraged me to start learning self defense,” said Habeil.  “I believe that women should be empowered to defend themselves.”

Habeil started taking self defense classes with one of her mom’s personal trainers who was also a cage fighter.

“Martial arts is very big in my Dad's side of the family, so I’ve always seen it and experienced it off hand,” said Habeil.

Habeil’s classes involve martial arts and Jiu Jitsu which is also a method of self defense for defeating an armed opponent in which one uses no weapon, or only a short weapon.

“One of my favorite activities is when we have relays with three of our largest men trainers who helps us practice our self defense,” said Habeil.

Habeil has taken classes at Sugar Fix Gym that focuses on three main components: weapons, Jiu Jitsu/wrestling and basic tricks. The gym is currently in the middle of switching locations.

“I haven’t taken classes for a while but when they relocate, I’d love to start again,” said Habeil.

Although Habeil does not compete, she plans to continue practicing martial arts in college. Since Habeil plans to attend college in San Francisco, she believes that it is very important to learn how to be protected.

“I believe that self defense is something that every girl should know,” said Habeil.  “I think that it is especially important to know when going off to college.”
