There is nothing like flying down the mountain, or pulling off a trick in the Super pipe.
Several students at Franklin ski or snowboard and many of those students are members of the Ski Club.
“Ski club is a great way to get to know new people and have fun,” said sophomore club member Kelsey Casper.
English teacher Samantha Raymond is the Ski Club sponsor.
Raymond is entering her 4th year as the ski club sponsor here at Franklin.
In Ms. Raymond’s four years as sponsor, the club has become one of the most popular in the school with about 150 members.
“It’s neat for me to see them outside of school in a different environment,” answered Raymond, when asked why she is the ski club sponsor.
For several students at Franklin skiing and snowboarding is not just a hobby, it’s a sport.
Many students have been skiing and snow boarding for their whole life and were members of the Ski Club at the middle school.
“I look forward to winter every year,” said club member Derek Demao, “I go all over the mountain, I ride on the slopes and then go to the park and do tricks,” added Demao.
Stories differ from student to student on when and how they learned to ski or board.
Most started by going out with family when they were very little.
“I first went with my aunt and uncle when I was five,” said Demao.
Skiing and snowboarding is also a very expensive sport.
According to www.rsn.com the average price of a new pair of skis is between five-hundred and eight-hundred dollars.
A one day Lift ticket at Seven Springs costs about fifty-five dollars.
After several days of skiing in a year this could really add up.
Last year the Ski Club took a weekend trip to Stowe ski resort and Sugar Bush ski resort.
The club left on Friday and skiied two days at Sugar Bush and then spent one day at Stowe, and then returned late on the following Monday.
The ski club took about 45 members on the trip last year.
“Last year’s trip was a lot of fun and I hope that this year’s trip is even better,” said Demao.
The club has additional plans for this upcoming year.
According to Raymond, the club is planning to go up to Seven Springs on Thursday nights when the weather permits.
They want to plan another trip with the similar ideas and it will be on Martin Luther King Day or on Presidents Day.
“We are looking at Killington[Vermont], but we are just looking around at this point,” said Raymond.
Where ever the ski club goes for their trip it will sure be a good time for all who are involved.
