On June 12th from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M., the sophomore class is holding a fundraising event and day of fun at CJ Barrymores. For 15 dollars, you can enjoy lunch, rides, games and a place to gather with all your friends while benefiting a good cause.
Following the tragedy, the sophomore class decided that Lake Shore needed a time to relax and celebrate the beginning of summer. According to Ms. Marston, “you could tell just by looking through the hallways that the students were down,” so she gathered her class officers together to brainstorm. Following the success of the freshmen bowling fundraiser organized last year, they decided to go bigger. At first Cedar Point was an idea, until it was decided that it would be too complicated and pretty expensive. With so many local businesses giving generous donations, CJ Barrymores joined in. Ms. Marston called the manager and he offered to give back ten dollars from every 15 dollar ticket sold. Ms. Marston saw this as a great opportunity and quickly got to planning.
It was decided that since three of the kids involved in the accident were sophomores, there would be a scholarship made in the name of each of them and the money raised would be split up evenly for each scholarship. It isn’t decided how or to who the scholarships will be given, but Ms. Marston did say that the students were “everyday kids who walked in and out with a smile, they contributed to class. We would like to give the scholarship to that sort of student.”
This event is open to Lake Shore High School students of all grades, plus the friends and family of Lake Shore students. Students from Kennedy Middle School and the three elementary schools are also invited to attend. Ms. Marston wanted it to be known that this isn’t about the sophomores, it’s about the four kids, and about Lake Shore as a school.
Fifteen dollars is a great price for an unlimited amount of fun and games. Included in the fee is also a hot dog, potato chip, and pop lunch. Sophomore Student Council President Sarah Vanacker stated, “it’s a really good way for people to hangout to start the summer, and it’s still raising money for a good cause.”
If you’re looking for a fun day with your classmates, this is definitely the way to go. If you haven’t paid yet and are still interested, talk to Ms. Marston to make arrangements.
