The Lake Shore varsity football team had a great year, finishing with 7 wins and 3 losses and hosting their very first home playoff game in the history of the school. Although they suffered a very disappointing loss against Hazel Park, no one can deny the effort and heart they put into their successful season. “I thought the team worked very well together and they challenged each other,” Head Coach Tom Iwanicki stated.

Ray Borkowski passed for 1,120 yards completing over fifty percent of his passes with 13 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. Chris Anderson led the team in rushing with 74 carries, racking up 799 yards, 15 touchdowns and averaging almost 11 yards a carry. Zac Sienel was the rushing runner-up with 104 carries, 614 yards and 4 touchdowns. Danny Carroll led the team in receiving, catching 41 passes and totaling 557 yards, 7 touchdowns and an average of 14 yards a catch. Deontae Bridgeman led the team with 137 tackles, 84 of them being solo-stops. Scott Petricevich was a close second with 126 tackles, also achieving 84 unassisted tackles. Zach Cetrone and Kevin Santo led the team with sacks, accumulating 4.0 and 3.0 sacks respectively. Danny Carroll also led the team with 5 interceptions, with Bobby Baize and Deontae Bridgeman gathering 2 interceptions apiece.

Lake Shore had a dominating 4-1 record at home. Iwanicki admits that, “our best first-half of football was played at the Homecoming game against Fitzgerald,” making it hard to discredit the fans for their school spirit and vocal support in those victories.

Iwanicki went on to name some of the “under the radar” players who don’t get as much publicity as some of the well-known players.  He stated, “Mike Kane did his job very well, but it was hardly ever noticed. Zac Cetrone is an excellent outside end; we put him out there and didn’t worry about that side, and all you hear about Bobby Baize is when he gets beat but he quietly had a great year and the list goes on.”  He also mentioned Robert Nimmo, Jake Alsko, Billy White, Doug Lambrix and Ryan Layne.

For the past three years, the Lake Shore football team has resided in the Silver Division for Macomb County and just recently were they promoted to Gold Division for their exceptional play and effort.  According to Iwanicki, the advancement in Divisions, “lets us know were getting our job done.”

Iwanicki went on to state, “the seniors stepped up and were great leaders.  We had fun and were goofy at times but we did a lot of hard work and I’m nothing but thankful to all of them.”  Congratulations on your successful season varsity football!
