The story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a classic fairytale that has been known for years by many. On March 30, 2012, the well known fairytale was given a comedic twist in the movie “Mirror Mirror.”
“Mirror Mirror” tells the story of a kingdom that was taken over by an evil queen, played by Julia Roberts, after the king goes to war and never returns. The only person who can possibly save the townspeople is the king’s daughter, Snow White, played by breakout star, Lily Collins. The queen exiles the young princess so she can’t interfere with her plan to marry the handsome prince Alcott played by Armie Hammer whom is an heir to another far-off kingdom so she can inherit his money. While in exile, Snow White meets a group of seven dwarfs who were thrown out of the kingdom because they were considered “undesirables” by the new queen. They work together to take down the queen and restore the kingdom to its former glory.
The movie made 18.1 million dollars opening weekend, but was not very well received by movie critics. “Mirror Mirror” averaged 5 out of 10 stars from top critics according to Rotten Tomatoes. “Who wants to see a fairytale that ways a ton? Mirror Mirror reflects badly on everyone involved”, said Peter Travers, top critic, to “The Rolling Stone”. Many critics are saying the movie was boring and not very original. Despite harsh ratings, it was ranked number five on the North American box office list beating out “21 Jump Street” and Dr.Suess’ “The Lorax.”
“Mirror Mirror” is a movie to see with family. The rated PG film creates a nice family night out that is fun for everyone. “Mirror Mirror” was directed by Tarsem Singh. This was his first attempt at directing a family film. Singh told Hollywood Reporter, “I wanted to make something that used the classical iconography of Snow White while displaying modern themes of female empowerment. I’ve done three movies that have all been kind of adult oriented, and I felt like doing a family movie.” The film definitely exhibits a thirst for power in the queen and Singh puts his twist on the classic fairytale effortlessly. Lilly Collins plays the confident, empowering version of Snow White perfectly.
The movie can be purchased on DVD starting February 24, 2012. Pick up a copy, sit down with the family, and enjoy a fresh retelling of one of the most beloved fairytales of all time.
