Lakeland High School’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Career’s class went to Publix on Thursday, October 19 to shop for teachers.

Teacher Dawn Mayo took her students to a different place each week to help develop life skills. “These trips are part of the ESE curriculum to try to teach the students independent life skills,” said Mayo.

4 students traveled to Publix to buy groceries that were assigned to them. The skills they learned were comparative shopping and money skills. After every one of these outings, they go out to eat so they can learn how to order independently and handle money.

These trips are successful because they teach skills that are vital to life. “One day they’ll have to use these skills on their own,” said Mayo. Their next trips consist of going to the library, power plant, printing press, another shopping trip, and then bowling for some downtime.
