Why do kids play sports? Playing sports is fun; it gives you something to do and a group to belong to. Playing on a team gives you a group of people who have the same goals and intentions as you. Research has found that kids who play sports, especially girls, are more likely to have a positive body image, have a higher self-esteem, and are less likely to be overweight and unhealthy. If you are involved in sports, you are less likely to do drugs and drink alcohol, because you would realize the impact these things would have on your performance. Girls who play sports are less likely to get pregnant, because they have a positive outlet to occupy their minds. Physical activities are also a good way to relieve stress and reduce depression. Sports help develop social teamwork and leadership skills. Kids quickly learn that they have to work together as a team to play sports.
If you think about it, sports are great way to keep in shape and you will achieve more. So get up off the couch, put that video game controller down and get active! Get involved in an activity this summer; it may actually change your life.
