At-a-glance

While many readers are well aware that March is the month of St. Patrick’s Day, the beginning of spring, and American Sign Language awareness, many Falcons have no idea that March is also Women’s History month, honoring past and present generations of women from around the world who have done their part in inspiring and influencing others.

Briar Woods history teacher Danielle Lackey believes the month is important and should have more value to female students, especially those who “don’t even know that the 19th amendment gave them the right to vote.”

“They (female students) think that they can take on the world, and they can, but that wouldn’t have been possible without the women of the past,” said Lackey.

Each year, several national institutions such as the Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Administration gather together in paying tribute to the generations of women who were committed to protecting nature, their rights, and the planet by creating specific themes each year.

The theme of 2012 is Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment, which addresses the recent gap change between women and men in terms of attending colleges across the nation. The topic is meant to not only inspire upcoming generations of women to continue this trend but to also remember the women of the past who have vigorously fought for the right to learn alongside men in the classroom.

Women’s History Month was passed by Congress in 1981 and was only meant to last during the week of March 7th, but since then, resolutions and authorizations have eventually lead to this celebratory dedication lasting for the entire month of March.
