The BWHS community experienced a little culture shock recently. - Fizzah Abbasi
On Friday, May 11th, a line of people anxiously awaited for the auditorium doors to open and the explosion of culture to begin at the annual Briar Woods’ International Night.

The Briar Woods International Club had kicked off the festivities on Monday, with a ‘Culture Shock’ theme all week. This included flags from several different countries hung around the cafeteria, and Culture Shock t-shirts and henna tattoos being sold at lunch as well.

Culture Shock week also consisted of different spirit days, where students could either dress up in clothing from other countries, or wear outfits from their native countries.

“The purpose of Culture Shock week was to get people hyped about learning about different cultures,” said sophomore and International Club officer Kaamela Hasan.

International Night included several cultural performances and a fashion show. During intermission, refreshments were offered in the cafeteria, where many clubs had also set up tables.

There were a variety of different performances during the talent portion of the night, ranging from classical Chinese and Malaysian music, to Indian, K-pop and belly dancing performances.

“The performances were amazing,” said sophomore Hema Narlapati. “I liked how there were different types of cultures represented.”

The fashion show showcased clothing from many countries including India, Pakistan, Africa, and even included students’ individual styles.

“The fashion show was a huge hit,” said sophomore Michelle Kwak. “It was a great to see everyone in their cultural outfits for once!”
