Seniors at Webutuck High School have a variety of privileges.  One is sitting at the senior lounge during lunch or free periods.  Along with the seniors, juniors who are members of the National Honor Society have the choice to sit in the senior lounge.

Some seniors feel the National Junior Society should be excluded.  Brett Sherman, a senior, offered his opinion on juniors in the lounge, simply saying, “I dislike it.”

There have been some complaints that the senior lounge is too crowded.  Some days there are not enough seats during lunch.  However, Anthony DeRenzis, another senior, doesn’t mind National Honor Society juniors in the lounge.

Seniors enjoy hanging out with friends as well as getting out of stuffy classrooms.  Anthony DeRenzis said that benefits are, “Not sitting in a boring class, and being able to talk to people.”  Students in the senior lounge don’t have to do work as long as they aren’t being disruptive.  Sometimes they even play cards, which would not be allowed in a study hall.

If the senior lounge privilege is abused, the privilege can be suspended.  Indeed, the principal took this action in October and December.

One question sometimes asked is why underachieving seniors use the lounge while hardworking underclassmembers can not.  Patricia Lasseur responded, “I don’t really think it’s fair, but underclassmen don’t have s choice because seniors wouldn’t appreciate underclassmen in their lounge.”

Although many seniors believe the senior lounge can be improved, a neighboring school doesn’t even have a senior lounge.  Tom Berry, a Dover High School senior was asked what their senior lounge was like, and he replied, “What’s a senior lounge?”
