Chilton residents who have rented or purchased movies from Movie Gallery are being forced to get their movie fix elsewhere. According to employees, the Chilton store is planning on closing at the end of March or beginning of April due to bankruptcy within the company.
Some Movie Gallery stores, such as the one in Chilton, are slowly liquidating and closing, while others had two days to pack up everything and shut the store down. Around 760 stores throughout the country are closing, and 360 of those locations are liquidating through a process like the Chilton location. "I’m surprised that Movie Gallery is closing because of how popular it was, but it seems like a lot of people use Netflix or download movies illegally," said senior Andrew Hoerth.
Movie Gallery still has a large variety of DVDs and games, including games for Wii and various systems. Other items for sale within the store include concessions and store fixtures. All of the gallery movies, or older movies that have been out for a few years, have been on sale since February, and almost everything in the store is currently 40 to 60 percent off.
Senior Fanessa Bowe said "I’m glad that it’s closing because everything is on sale, but most people I know went to Movie Gallery to rent movies. And people who don’t have a debit card can’t use Redbox, so there’s not many other places to go."
Movie Gallery customers are not completely out of luck with the closing of the Chilton store due to the availability of other retailers in the area. Express Video, located on Madison Street, has a large selection of movies. The Chilton Wal-Mart also has a Redbox rental machine located near the entrance inside the store.
