Thinking about a top ten college or counting on a scholarship to help with school? If you want to get into your college of choice or qualify for merit based grants or scholarships, you need to do well on your ACT test. The ACT is usually taken in your junior year. There are a number of ways to prepare for the ACT and most counselors and teachers recommend using some sort of test preparation for the ACT.
Junior Marcus Gill used the ACT Workshop and ACT Preparation to study for his test. Ian MacFarlane also did ACT Preparation. He said he also went over notes from classes that will be a part of the test. “I am excited and ready to get it over with,” said MacFarlane.
Everyone recognizes the importance of the ACT for continuing education and everyone has different ways to prepare for the test. There is plenty of anxiety and excitement associated with preparing and taking the test.
Eric Scimeca college resource suggested a number of resources for test preparation; MEL.org where you can take practice tests, ACT Preparation Book with practice tests and strategies. He said, “Don’t wait for the day before the test to study. Give yourself time and practice managing your time.”
“Take the test more than once.” Scimeca added. He said those who take the test more than once often did better.
The ACT can’t be taken more than 12 times. The subjects covered on the ACT are science, math, reading, science and writing. Some schools do not look for the writing portion. The test without writing is $34.00, with writing $49.50.
There are a number of online preparation aids for the ACT. Some have a cost and some are free. The ACT Online Prep was designed by the ACT development group. The Real ACT Guide includes five retired ACT tests and Preparing for the ACT is available at most high schools and contains practice tests and writing examples. In addition, there are practice tests, test tips and strategies available on line.
If you prefer class room preparation many schools and private centers offer classes for ACT test taking. Jackson High offers an ACT prep class. There are a few private locations like Sylvan and Kaplan that also offer evening or weekend classes. Private tutoring is even available through centers and individuals offering assistance for ACT success.
When it comes to the ACT the questions is not “Should I prepare?” but “How should I prepare?” With test preparation including strategies for answering questions, practice tests and sample essays you can go into the ACT with confidence.
