On Thursday of last week, Facebook changed it’s privacy settings so that users are less prone to embarrassment. The new settings allow users to pre-approve photos, posts, and comments that any friends have tagged them in.

Facebook, as well as other social networking sites, have been criticised in the past for jeapordising user’s privacy. Now with these changes, the company hopes to limit the cyberbullying caused by the unattractive pictures or unnecessary information shared on their page.

Though there were privacy options for users in the past, they were hard to find and difficult to understand. With the new changes, changing privacy settings is easier, faster and more efficient for the user. Chris Cox, Facebook’s vice-principle of product, believes the old controls were not bad, the new settings are just more user-friendly.

“I don't think the old controls were bad. I just think the new ones are much better. The goal is just to make [the settings] more in-line and more immediate, just right there in the profile,” said Cox.

Many other changes have taken place on the site, including:

PROFILE VIEW: Settings can be made to change who can see certain items on the user’s page. Now there is to option to actually see the page as it appears to a certain person. We all know there is a big difference between what your boss and what your best friend should see.

CHANGE YOUR MIND: Once a status or picture is posted, there was no way to go back and change the settings for who sees it. Now you will be able to go back and change who can and cannot see the information.

“CHECK-IN” ANYWHERE: Before, the only way to “check-in” to a location you are at was by having the Facebook mobile app. Now changes have been made so that tagging where you’re at can be posted through any type of Facebook access, not just on your phone.

The Facebook changes began slowly profile-by-profile on Thursday and will reach all users within a few days.
