To Sip or Not to Sip - Starbucks Releases New Drink

In the hot halcyon days of summer, there’s nothing better than a cold drink. On Friday, July 13th, Starbucks was offering complimentary refreshers in hopes of drawing customers towards their new creation.

As per the name, Refreshers are a new type of drink that Starbucks has developed for the summer. So how did they taste?

Flash writers Mason Ganz and Amanda Wong took a sip of the “Cool Lime” Refresher first.

Mason: Although very cool and icy, the overly sweet, bitter taste of the refresher was not one to be desired again. The ‘cool lime’ was reminiscent of a bottled lime drink... only worse.  On the other hand, the slice of lime in the drink complemented the summer style and would draw one towards it after a long bike ride, or hot sports practice.

Amanda: The ‘cool lime’ looked very nice. The icy cup looked like it was going to taste great....But looks aren’t everything.

To me, the ‘cool lime’ tasted a little bit like lemon soap and Gatorade, not that I eat soap in my spare time. I was not a fan. Perhaps it would have tasted better if I were a bit more dehydrated?  However, the lime in the drink was a nice touch, and if Starbucks works a little bit on taste, it has potential...Maybe.

And how did the “Very Berry Hibiscus” turn out?

Amanda: Honestly, the berry-flavored Refresher tasted like a mix of different, oddly-contrasting fruits. It also awkwardly smelled like potpourri. However, the “look” of the drink was very nice. Starbucks had mixed crushed berries in with the drink, giving it a hip and refreshing look. Initially, I really did not like the drink, but it eventually grew on me. I did drink it the most out of the two. If either of the two succeed, it’ll be this one.
Mason: The ‘very berry refresher’ was similar to the lime in an overly sweetened kind of way. The tea could have been left on its own, as the syrup made it too sweet, and ‘fake’ tasting. With the pieces of berry floating throughout the beverage, it looked like an enjoyable drink-- perfect for summer! If only the taste was as appealing.

The final verdict?

Amanda: Starbucks, please get back to your drawing boards. The rest of your drinks are amazing. I love all your Green Tea drinks, especially the Green Tea Frappe and Green Tea Latte. Refreshers are a great concept, but the flavors need a lot of fine tuning.

Mason: Overall, when it comes down to which one was better, I would have to agree that the ‘very berry’ has the possibility to be a hit. However, their other common, traditional beverages will always be on the top of my list.

So Starbucks, ready to accept the challenge? The Flash wants to see if you can make your Refreshers a little more...refreshing.
