Since its institution at Holy Family High School, the photography class curriculum has been film-based. This year, however, is the first year that the class has been changed to primarily digital transition better with the technology prevalent today.
Earlier this year in a faculty meeting photo teacher Peter Lutgen suggested the switch. “I was for the switch because the technology is better equipped for today,” said Lutgen.
This is a big change from outdated SLR cameras and black and white to contemporary cameras.
Students who take the class now are getting almost a different curriculum than the students that took Photo in the past.
Previously in Photo, a dark room was required to use the wet collodion development process. Junior Carolina Gutierrez said, “I enjoyed taking the class last year because we got the chance to develop our own pictures and see how they turned out.”
Classmate Jordan Kudrna also enjoyed the class because students were able to learn about the process for older cameras opposed to the digital technology used today.
This new class at Holy Family requires less time because photos can be loaded directly from the camera to the computer.
Senior Sarah Dartez, who is taking the class now, says that she enjoys the way photo class is taught and is anxious to see how her photos turn out.
Although the two classes differ, reason can be the only explanation for the switch.
“Black and white film is more of an art form now,” Lutgen said, “It is also harder to find.”
Even though the class is now digital, Lutgen will still retain basics from the old class such as black and white composition, so not all of the old class is lost.
“Digital photgraphy skills will help students who wish to be on the newspaper or yearbook staff,” said moderator Jill Prew.
A photo is said to be worth 1,000 words, digital or film. Holy Family students now have the advantage to learn about the timeless art form in all its varieties.
