“This one time, at band camp…” This famous quote from the American Pie movies is one that many high school students throw around frequently to get a laugh. However, for senior Katy Biette band camp is no laughing matter.
“I attend band camp during the summer,” said Biette.
The senior trombone player has been in the Holy Family jazz band for the past four years and has been playing the instrument since the fifth grade. However, trombone is not the only instrument that Biette plays. She used to play the oboe and has been playing piano since the second grade.
She is always looking to try new instruments.
“I’m currently learning how to play the trumpet. Or try to anyway,” said Biette.
While Biette is musically multi-talented, she admits that the trombone is her favorite instrument to play.
“I’ve invested the most time into playing trombone and it’s the one that I get to play most often,” said Biette.
While Biette’s favorite instrument is the trombone, one of her favorite memories comes from the last year’s Greeley Jazz Festival.
“It was just so much fun. All of us [jazz band] have these crazy inside jokes now. It’s great,” said Biette.
Biette enjoys being a member of the jazz band because of all of the people that she has met through it. The class has also taught her important lessons in responsibility.
“Being in jazz band has shown me the importance of working outside of class because that is when you have to practice. I’ve also learned how to really work as a team with the other members of the band and help the whole group effort,” said Biette.
When Biette is not playing music, she is a member of both the track and cross country teams at Holy Family. She also finds time to participate in both the Chess and French Club.
Outside of the school, she runs for a club track team to stay in shape for the school season and also takes private trombone lessons.
Music, however, holds a vital role in Biette’s life and she believes that everyone should take a music class at least once in their life.
As Biette continues with her musical education and prepares for her final concert at Holy Family, she knows that one thing will remain constant with her through her life.
“I’ll always be a band geek at heart.”
