This is a new column devoted to finding and suggesting music to the general student population. Music genres will be on a rotating basis ranging from Baroque to modern depending on the columnist’s preferences and progression of the genre cycle. The first genre to be showcased is rock music focusing on groups during the 1960s-1980s.

Many people today are rediscovering some buried musical treasure from the last few decades and realizing that it is better than most music today. This may seem like a bold and callus statement to make, however it is justified and proven by the recent revival of

c.1970s-1980s rock music. Nothing exemplifies this more than popular video games like the Guitar Hero series and Rock Band, which feature set list of music by groups such as Iron Maiden, Van Halen, AC/DC, and The Who. So, in an attempt to aid those of you who are still discovering these musical gems, here is a list that I have compiled of groups you might want to check out (Some of these will probably be well-know to most of you.)*:

The Who

Pink Floyd

Guns ‘n Roses

AC/DC

Deep Purple

Kansas

Aerosmith

R.E.M.

Bon Jovi

Eric Clapton

Led Zeppelin

Queen

Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR)

Neil Young

The Kinks

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Cheap Trick

The Doors

If you want to become more familiar with older rock music, I recommend finding the influences for some of the bands on the list, but this is a good starting point for those of you who are new to this genre.

*Disclaimer: This is not intended to be an exhaustive list and does not necessarily reflect the importance of all bands of the time period.
